Find out what Beyond Limitations
Career School can do for your
you today.

The mission of Beyond Limitations Career School is to offer living wage career training programs for people with disabilities. These career training programs will be accommodating, affordable, and industry based.
The school’s parent company, Portland Habilitation Center Northwest (PHCNW), was founded in 1951 and was known as Portland’s Children Center – a school devoted to educating children with disabilities. Over time, the children “grew up”, becoming adults with special needs who faced severely limited occupational opportunities. Realizing this, the Center began to develop a wide assortment of vocational programs ranging from sheltered services to landscape and custodial training programs.
Janitorial training at PHCNW was initiated in 1967, and by 1973 the Building Maintenance Department had begun commercial contracting. The operation has grown dramatically in recent years, relying mainly on the experience and expertise of managers, instructors, supervisors, and support staff whose combined abilities, innovative ideas, and dedication to teamwork have translated into a remarkably successful venture.
Today, PHCNW aims to continue with its motto of moving beyond limitations by offering new industry based career training programs.
BLCS’s training model is unique. Most of the training happens "on the job" (OJT). We endorse "real world" pedagogy – meaning that we feel the best learning occurs in real job situations, situations where learned skills are immediately applied to complete a real task. Each course differs, however the extensive real world training is a unique characteristic of our programs. On average, 20% of the training is book/classroom, while the other 80% is internship (OJT). While students are completing the internship portion of their training, they will be paid an hourly wage. This also is a very unique and essential element to our training program. PHCNW will pay BLCS’s trainee’s while they are working on PHCNW contracts. Most training will take place at the contract location.
3829 SE 74th Ave, Portland, OR 97206 is Beyond Limitations Career School’s main training facility. The portion of the building we will be using for teaching and learning has 1 large lecture/work room, 3 classrooms (one will soon be turned into a computer training/learning lab), 3 offices, 4 restrooms, a large cafeteria, common area, landscaped courtyard with benches, and a 35 – 40 car parking area. The building is very accessible to public transportation, with 2 main bus lines and a MAX stop within a short walk to the school’s location.
Training will also occur at 5312 Northeast 148th Ave, Portland, OR 97230. This is the address of our main manufacturing facility (Portland Habilitation Center Industrial). This is a large solar powered warehouse where PHCI fulfills a variety of industrial contracts. TRIMET developed a bus route specifically to help people with disabilities have easy access to this location. There is a bus stop right in front of the building that is serviced from 9 am – 3 pm.

A third facility is our landscaping barn – located next to 5312 Northeast 148th Ave. This facility contains all of the landscaping equipment PHCNW uses to fulfill its landscaping contracts. The Landscape Maintenance program will use this facility and 3829 SE 74th Ave for its training courses.
