Mike Dethman is always a crowd favorite when it comes to karaoke or any type of singing event.
“I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and I sing with the Portland Mormon Choir and Orchestra,” he said. “Singing has always been my life. This is my second year with them, and we are preparing for our Easter concert.”
He said that working at PHCNW gives him a purpose and a sense of self-worth. He also feels that his job provides something more than security… the opportunity to purse outside interests he is passionate about, like singing.
“I think it is great what this organization does, and at times I think I take this job for granted,” he said.
Mike has dealt with autism for most of his life and had no idea PCHNW even existed. He said he has had his own challenges to overcome and once he got hired on with PCHNW, he never looked back.
“I have learned to be more patient with myself if I don’t catch onto something right away,” he said. “For me, I have to do things step by step. I am learning something new every day and that has definitely broadened my understanding.”
He said that right now the biggest account is with Danner Shoe Company. He is responsible for making the insoles with the materials provided to him. Mike is also responsible for fulfilling incoming orders, prioritizing orders and maintaining supplies.
“It can get monotonous if you don’t like standing,” he said. “But it is a busy account, and I rather enjoy it.”
His favorite project took place when he worked on a particular customer account and was responsible for operating the stamp machine.
“I was able to learn how to use this machine to mix various paints and paint thinners and apply the correct measurements,” Mike said. “But what was really cool about it for me was having the opportunity to be involved with creating the materials for future training—a step-by-step instruction piece.”
When time permits, he likes to play video games and go on dates with his wife.
